Dahlonega, Georgia – April 13, 2026 – Lumpkin County High School is proud to announce the hiring of Matt Walters as its new Athletic Director and Assistant Principal. Walters brings more than a decade of proven leadership in athletic administration, coaching, and education, along with a strong record of building successful programs and fostering student-athlete development.
Walters most recently served as Athletic Director for the Gulfport School District in Gulfport, Mississippi, where he oversaw all aspects of the district’s athletic programs, including budgeting, scheduling, compliance, and staff supervision. In that role, he also served as the District Title IX Coordinator and supervised more than 75 athletic department employees while increasing student engagement across athletic programs.
Walters’ accomplishments include leading programs that achieved 13 total state championships and earning four Coach of the Year honors. He is also known for his commitment to leadership development, having created the Student Athlete Leadership Team (SALT) and the UNIFORM Leadership Training Program, as well as founding The Big Blue Foundation.
“Matt Walters is a dynamic leader with a clear vision for athletics and student success,” said Superintendent Sharon Head. “His experience, integrity, and passion for developing student-athletes make him an outstanding addition to Lumpkin County High School.”
Walters holds a Master of Science in Athletic Administration from Ohio University and a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Southwest Baptist University. He is also a Certified Master Athletic Administrator (CMAA) through the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, reflecting the highest level of professional certification in the field.
“I am honored to join Lumpkin County High School and become part of such a strong community,” said Walters. “I look forward to working with students, coaches, and staff to build on the school’s tradition of excellence while continuing to develop well-rounded student-athletes.”
As Athletic Director and Assistant Principal, Walters will focus on strengthening athletic programs, enhancing student opportunities, and supporting the overall mission of Lumpkin County Schools.
