On Saturday, January 23, 30+ 6th graders came to LCMS from 9 AM to Noon to participate in Fäst Start, the beginning band program that allows every student to learn the very basics about their musical instrument of choice: how to assemble and disassemble their instrument, how to care for their instrument, how to form their embouchure, and how to make their first note. Each student was grouped by instrument to streamline the instruction. Instruments introduced were: flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trumpet, trombone, tuba, and percussion.

Previously, grade 8 students read a horror story, "The Outsider" by H.P. Lovecraft - it's a tale about a narrator who is unsure, confused and searching for answers. Students quickly learn that the narrator isn't reliable and that there's something not quite right. In this lesson, students were tasked with writing an informational short response in which they analyze and evaluate the narrator of "The Outsider." Ms. Forrester read students an exemplar response - composed by a former student - which was discussed afterward.
